29/11/09 V Didsbury - Cup Game (6-4 George S x4 Elliot R x1 Max x1)

A game played on pitch reminiscent of the 1st division in the 1970’s the boys managed a brave fight back to gain a place in the next round of the cup.

Hollingworth got off to a lively start playing some good football in the conditions but within 20 minutes Didsbury were 2 goals to the good looking the side more determined and likely to progress. Late on in the first half Hollingworth hit back with a well worked goal taken by George Sanders to make the score 2-1 at half time.

Within 90 seconds of the restart Hollingworth levelled the score and went 3-2 down!! A spirited second half display after that setback saw some good finishing by George (4) Max and Elliott R . to see Hollingworth to a well a deserved 6-4 win.

Ryan and James (emergency keeper!) were men of the match (get pitches like this in Adelaide John/Josh?)

13/12/09 V Hazel Grove away (2-1 Elliot R x2)

Again a game played on a tricky pitch but this time fit for play.  The pitch was frosty on top making control and running with the ball difficult.  Hollingworth got off to good start having the majority of the ball for the first 20 minutes without really threatening the Hazel Grove Goal.  A dip in concentration allowed Hazel Grove to have a spell on top and we were lucky not to conceed a stonewall penalty thanks to some generous refing! Late on in the first half George V.  replaced Frank and a switch of wings for Alex saw a change in tactics.  0-0 at half time.  The second half started well again with Hollingworth back on top briefly.  Hazel Grove openned the scoring with a quick breakaway down their left ending with an excellent cross and first time half volley finish.  How would we respond?  The answer is that we went on to dominate the rest of the half with Elliot R. scoring a great goal fgrom 25 yards over the keeper.  Not too long after Elliot again collected the ball on the edge of the box beating one defender and sliding the ball past the keeper to give us the lead.  Afer that the second certain penalty of the game was turned down when Elliot was pulled down in the box.  Claims were turned down as he didn't give the one in the first half!!!! After several great chances we ended the game on top and with a confidence building 2-1 win.  The two Elliots were men of the match.

24/01/10 Vs Reddish home (Cup) (3-2 frank, Max,Elliott R)

After a long mid winter break the season resumed with a cup tie against Reddish from division 1 so for the first time we were underdogs for the match. The pitch was in good condition apart from some large puddles down one wing which Alex discovered early in the game! The Game started with Hollingworth on the front foot playing some good football. After an enforced change in midfield with Kieran completing 70 minutes of running in 20 minutes Reddish had there first spell on top. With a break away attack Hollingworth deservedly opening the scoring with close range effort from Frank. Unfortunately it took just a couple of minutes for Reddish to equalise after Hollingworth dived in to 3 challenges allowing the left winger to run all the way in to the box and score. All even at half time. The second half saw a tactical switch with James playing right back and Elliot D coming on at left back. The next 25 minutes were possibly the best the team have played at 11 aside. Hollingworth created chance after chance but could not finish. All the old clichés were coming out on the side lines and yes they were right – well part right! Reddish broke away after a period of Hollingworth attacking and with a 30 yard run down the right and good cross finished by the Reddish forward from 5 yards we were 2-1 down with the refs version of 9 minutes to play. A short period of panic set in then Hollingworth started to play again. With 5 mins to go Elliott R passed down the right wing to Alex who put in a great cross for Max to head home. The capacity crowd went wild!! 2-2 and extra time? No, time for another raid down the right this time Alex with a perfectly weighted ball put Elliott R through. With still plenty to do he beat his man ran in to the box a slotted home passed the keepers left hand. After a long two minutes and our first ever booking!! (Kieran for descent) the whistle went. Next round Bramhall away.
Men off the Match Pete - Elliott R  \Rick - Josh J

07/02/10 Vs Bramhall Lions 75A away (Cup Quarter) 9 - 1 (Max 4, Kyeron 1, Josh 1, George S 1, George V 1, Danny 1)

In to the Quarter final of the cup for the first time and first division opposition again.  Hollingworth started very slowly and couldn't seem to get going. After 10 minutes the inevitable happened and a through ball down the middle was picked and finished well by the Bramhall forward over Brad.  After the re-start Hollingworth put in a few committed tackles which seemed to wake them up.  Danny and Josh took control at the back not allowing the Bramhall 'Crouch' like centre forward any joy at all.  The equiliser came from a good finish from Kyeron accross the keeper and Hollingworth were off and running.  We were on top and gained full control of the game.  After one attack broke down with the keeper sweeping the ball away to near the half way line Josh smashed the ball back towards goal going in over the keeper, a fantastic goal!! his dad and Pete repeating the celebration from the previous round!! After that we never looked back with two tap ins for Max before half time.  Danny M came on in net to make his debut in the second half.  Bramhall were a beaten side at the start of the second half and the expected fight back never came as Hollingworth continued to dominate with 5 more goals including 2 for Max The finished with the best result of the season and trip into the semi final for the first time.
MOM Rick/Alex    Pete/Sam  Two 100% battling performances.
Well done everybody lets carry this fantastic team spirit forward into the league if we ever get to play a league game again!!!
